The Daily Prompt – Soil

When we die we shall all return to the earth

Back to nature. Back to the soil

Where we begin the journey of an inevitable decay

Lifeless as the fall leaves

Oh no, life is so transient

For this life must be extinguished

Whether we are rich or poor.

Black or white

Educated or illiterate

Beautiful or ugly

Tall or short

It makes no difference who we are

It makes no difference what we are

It makes no difference the life we’ve lived

When we die we shall all return to the earth

Just like our forefathers

Our ancestors and all the sages that once lived

We will be lowered down into the soil

The rich, smelly, wet, and brown soil

The icky, black, sticky, manure-like soil

It doesn’t matter how the gravestone or the cemetery is beautified

It’s the soil. The ground. The earth.

So let’s nurture this life.

And not neglect the earth too

For when we die, we shall return to the soil.

  1. That was hilarious. Haha. I think if we realise that life is fleeting, we up our games and activities. That was deep though. And I like the captions you used “Back to nature” and “Back to the soil. That could be the title of this poem… lol.
