It’s another signal that the day has come
As the metal bell continues to reverberate
Like the voice of a thousand cries
Mingled with the melodic clanging
That echoed all through the countryside
Nearby, are the hurried steps of the weekly enthusiasts?
Clad in the finest of their Sunday apparels
The Reverend sat in the Vestry
With his hands clamped on his knees
Awaiting the tick of time for the benediction
He looked regal in his long robe
***************
It’s 10 0’clock and the cathedral is filled to the brim
The backside of the gigantic edifice parades heads of late-comers
Standing whispering subtle inaudible expressions
On the front row are empty seats
But no one dare rest their butts on these sacred spaces
Clearly inscribed on them were the revered words – Reserved.
For the knights and the affluent who fuel the gospel
***************
Ahhhh, Nkiru sat between the two aged women
In her usual demeanour of a saintly child
She raised her head skyward
And with hands clasped together, she begins to whisper
Oh Lord she begins
Oh Lord, teach me your words
Teach me in kindness
Teach me in love
Oh Lord, help us to learn your ways
Ignite the power of love among your People
Give us the divine impulse to show your love
So that the world will dine less in wickedness
So that your children will shed their evilness
And sheath the sword of hatred and violence
Oh Lord, give us a new heart of friendship
Of humbleness and compassion and of gratitude
To know that we are your children
Born to show love to one another
Born to sow the seeds of affability
And of good deeds
Oh Lord, protect our world
Protect our families
And make us prosper in your righteousness
Oh Lord, answer our prayers
And bless us beyond our words
Amen.
